It's all in a day!

Friday evening. Had an interesting 24 hours. Was doing fine yesterday until stricken local hotel rang desperate for room (which I had anticipated being empty - and therefore left cleaning of bathroom). Took pity on double booked couple and had a Fawlty Towers moment nabbing flowers and finishing room quickly but they were grateful!

Today going fine until realised that we had 3 rooms to turn around (luckily Diane was sterling). Then brother rang for bed. Then single guy - who is in twin room - rang to say he was going to Bath for evening but he was sending a friend in his place. Fine, well sort of fine. Had imagined peaceful few hours and early bed in preparation for early rise and late party Saturday. And not too happy when this guy rang me to say he was in Norfolk (not just round the corner), leaving at 8.00 with ETA of 10pm.

Brother rings again. There will be 3 of them. No time to do anything with beds. Where are they going to sleep? Plants desperate for water as bone dry. New guests - some very chatty arrive early, so couldn't pick all sweet peas and raspberries. Others arrive altogether. Run back and forth from kitchen with trays of tea and cake. Off they all go for supper. Moments peace and then....whoops, one couple back having had horrid meal in Selsey. Just as I was thinking of joining brother in pub. More talk - the chatty couple and yes, they'd appreciate cup of coffee.

OK. It's then 9pm. Table not laid. Family beds not made. Me not mentally made. Bread not made.

Brief 30 minute interlude when joined others in pub. Legs aching!

10pm. Phone call from Norfolk chappy stuck on M25. Guess what. He's going to be late. His ETA now 11.30. Grrrrrrrrr. Specially wanted early night as no good at burning candle both ends.

And another guess what....there's yet another friend of nephew coming. Leave them to sort out sofa beds and mattresses on floor. And just seen it's 11.30.

Remind me, why did I choose to do this?

Goodwood - Festival of Speed

It's one of the weekends in the year when motor enthusiasts flock to the south coast - not a bed to be had, lanes full of interesting cars and most heading in one direction - Goodwood. Our drive was elevated by the addition of this lovely Morgan.

Sunday - headed to the Festival of Speed, along with thousands of others. Perfect day but breezy: so dry that it was very dusty especially the rally track.

Sunny weekend by the sea

What a wonderful weekend! The hottest of the year: sea is warm and Itchenor is a lovely place to be in this weather - near to West Wittering and on Chichester Harbour.

In the garden the sweet peas are doing really well and are gorgeous!

Ducklings

Had an extra family staying with us - uninvited guests - they've been before but am perplexed at how they are found in the chicken run - has the mother duck realised that it's safe from predators? Been sitting on a nest in the hedge?

Luckily had willing b & b guests who helped keep the chickens in whilst encouraging the duck and her ducklings to head off towards the nearby pond.

Last time it was eleven ducklings, this time only five.

Summer's already arrived

Where's the time gone? Tom and Regan got married at the end of May in the dear little church of St Nicholas, Itchenor right opposite... and now suddenly it's summer.

Found the first raspberries today and there's just enough to give some to the guests for breakfast tomorrow morning - and a few
wild strawberries too...no carbon footprint, no chemicals...just good, honest, red deliciousness - straight from the garden.

Things happening around the house!

Frosty this morning but really warmed up. Got some help doing a few odd jobs that need doing - have chosen the best option and headed outside.

Lovely clump of daffodils and the red camellia is out. Found a little blue tit on its back (thought it might have hit the window)....it recovered well. Attempted to take a photo but difficult with one hand and it's out of focus!

Trying to do all the jobs I should have done in the autumn and during the winter before everything really starts pushing up!

Goodwood House

Well, you'll be pleased to hear that I've been picking up leaflets on your behalf! Laid out in Goodwood House - terrific venue and an opportunity to go into one or two of the rooms used for receptions/weddings.

Took advantage of talking to them about the Goodwood events coming up this year - Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival (now so hugely popular for all the car fanatics!), Glorious Goodwood for horse racing and - new this year - Vintage Goodwood. The latter sounds fun - weekend in August with lots of things from 50s to 90s......I'm sure we'll hear much more about this!
